The Problems of Refugees and Stateless Persons are in the Focus of the Ministry of Internal Affairs
On April 14, the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Vahe Ghazaryan received the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Armenia Kavita Belani.
Upon welcoming the guest, Vahe Ghazaryan congratulated her on her appointment. The Minister, while emphasizing the effective cooperation that has been established with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Armenia, highlighted various areas of collaboration including the organization of training courses, legislative improvements, addressing issues related to asylum, stateless persons, and other related matters.
Ghazaryan highlighted a number of measures planned within the support program financed by the European Union aimed at migration and police reforms during 2023-2024.
Kavita Belani, thanking for the warm welcome, mutually congratulated Vahe Ghazaryan on his appointment as the Minister of Internal Affairs in Armenia and wished him success, expressing his satisfaction to the Government of Armenia and the people of Armenia for their infinite hospitality and magnanimity, highlighting them as the best practice.
Armen Ghazaryan, the Head of the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, presented the measures implemented by Armenia to solve the problems of refugees and stateless persons. Kavita Belani expressed her gratitude to the Armenian side for taking steps to address the issue of stateless persons. She emphasized the importance of uniting efforts to eradicate statelessness in Armenia by the end of this year.
The parties also discussed the necessity of creating a working group aimed at solving the problem of refugees who have been living in Armenia for years, coming from different countries. They emphasized the importance of acquiring Armenian citizenship by the refugees, so that they can continue to call Armenia their home and settle permanently.
At the meeting, an agreement was reached to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
